Giovanni is the eighth gym leader in Pokémon Red, in Viridian City. Giovanni uses Ground-type Pokémon: Rhyhorn (Lv 45), Dugtrio (Lv 42), Nidoqueen (Lv 44), Nidoking (Lv 45), and Rhydon (Lv 50). Beat Giovanni for the Earth Badge, which makes every Pokémon obey you, and TM27 Fissure. Best counters: Water, Ice, and Ground moves.

Giovanni's strongest Pokémon is level 50, so aim for a team around level 52–55. Water, Ice, and Ground moves are super effective against most of the team. Rhyhorn is weak to Water, Grass, Ice, Fighting, and Ground. Dugtrio is weak to Water, Grass, and Ice. Nidoqueen is weak to Water, Ice, Ground, Psychic, and Bug. Nidoking is weak to Water, Ice, Ground, Psychic, and Bug. Rhydon is weak to Water, Grass, Ice, Fighting, and Ground.
